Huawei Launches the First Foldable PC: MateBook Fold

Huawei has officially launched the MateBook Fold, calling it the world’s first foldable PC. The device features a flexible 18-inch OLED screen, top-tier specs, and Huawei’s HarmonyOS platform.

The MateBook Fold weighs just 1.16 kg and measures only 7.3 mm when unfolded. It includes a dual-layer OLED display with a peak brightness of 1600 nits. The screen supports HDR Vivid, the P3 color gamut, and a high contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1. The 3.3K resolution display delivers clear visuals and adjusts automatically with LTPO adaptive refresh rate technology, which also improves energy efficiency.

Huawei claims this is the first PC to use LTPO in a commercial foldable display. The foldable screen allows different aspect ratios. When folded, the screen adopts a 3:2 ratio. When fully open, it changes to a 4:3 ratio, giving users more space to work or watch content.

Huawei MateBook Fold Features a Custom Hinge, Advanced Cooling, and Smart Software

Huawei built the MateBook Fold with a large hinge to manage the flexible display. The hinge measures 285 mm, making it the largest in the laptop industry. It increases hovering torque by 400% and improves load-bearing by 100%, offering stability across different fold angles.

The hinge uses a three-stage shaft to ensure smooth transitions when opening or closing. The hinge supports small angles from 0–20 degrees and remains stable up to 150 degrees. These wide angles allow more flexible screen use, even with external keyboards.

For cooling, Huawei added diamond aluminum dual fans and a thin antigravity vapor chamber. These help reduce internal heat and keep performance consistent during extended use.

The rear of the MateBook Fold uses leather and metal, giving it a premium look and feel. It’s also water-resistant and stain-resistant. Huawei integrated a stand on the back, which opens and closes smoothly to support the device at different viewing angles.

HarmonyOS Powers the Huawei MateBook Fold

The MateBook Fold runs on HarmonyOS, Huawei’s in-house operating system. It works with Huawei’s ecosystem and supports distributed connectivity through the company’s full-scenario interconnection platform.

The system supports up to 160MB/s transfer speeds and is four times more stable when connecting with other Huawei devices like smartphones, tablets, or displays. The MateBook Fold also includes WPS Office software and smart features found in Huawei phones and tablets.

Developers can build and test apps on the device using HarmonyOS development tools, giving them access to shared device features across Huawei’s ecosystem.

Huawei MateBook Fold Pricing and Storage Options

Huawei priced the MateBook Fold based on storage capacity. The model with 32GB RAM and 1TB storage is priced at 23,999 yuan (around $3,328 USD). The 2TB version costs 26,999 yuan (around $3,744 USD).

Both versions of the foldable PC include the full set of display, hinge, and ecosystem features. Huawei has not announced international release plans yet, but the MateBook Fold is now available in China.
