Reported specifications ahead of Samsung’s London Galaxy Unpacked event point to AMOLED panels capable of 3,000 nits on the regular watch and a startling 5,000 nits on the alleged Galaxy Watch Ultra 2.
Those numbers need the usual pre-launch caveat. Peak brightness is measured in a very specific moment, often across a small portion of the panel, rather than what you see all day. Still, if Samsung gets anywhere close to those figures in real use, it would address one of the more irritating smartwatch problems: trying to read a running pace or a navigation prompt in direct summer sunlight. A watch is supposed to be glanceable. Too often, it feels like checking a phone through sunglasses.
The leak, circulated ahead of the event alongside product imagery, says the standard Galaxy Watch9 will come in familiar 40mm and 44mm case sizes. The smaller model is tipped to use a 1.34-inch display, while the larger version gets a 1.47-inch screen. Both are said to have sapphire crystal protection, which is a meaningful upgrade only if Samsung has improved the surrounding case’s ability to shrug off everyday knocks as well.
Samsung’s current wearable lineup already sits near the top of the Android watch pile, largely because its health features, hardware polish and integration with Galaxy phones are hard for rivals to match. But the basic formula hasn’t changed much recently. Brighter screens would be a sensible place to spend Samsung’s engineering budget. No one has ever finished a hike and complained that their watch face was too readable.
A familiar formula, with an unusually large chip claim
The reported internals are where this Galaxy Watch9 story gets more interesting. Both new models are said to run on a chip called Snapdragon Wear Elite with 2GB of RAM. Storage is tipped at 32GB for the standard watch and 64GB for the Ultra 2.
That processor name should make readers pause. Samsung has relied heavily on its own Exynos wearable silicon in recent Galaxy Watches, while Qualcomm’s public smartwatch platform naming has followed a different path. It’s possible the reporting reflects a new Qualcomm product or a regional naming detail not yet made public. It’s also possible that a retail listing, marketing document or leak has muddled the specification. My read: treat the chip as the least settled part of an otherwise plausible list until Samsung puts it on a slide.
That distinction matters because a new processor affects the things people actually live with: app launch times, map responsiveness, battery drain, watch-face complexity and how long Samsung can support the device. A fresh case design is nice. A watch that doesn’t hesitate when you raise your wrist is nicer.

Frankly, €409 is difficult to call a bargain for a smartwatch that will likely need replacing well before a conventional watch wears out. But pricing only tells half the story. Apple has normalized expensive wrist computers for iPhone owners, and Google’s Pixel Watch has pushed further upmarket too. Samsung is betting that buyers want health tracking, payments, notification handling, music storage and emergency-friendly connectivity in one compact device. For some people, that package genuinely earns its keep; for others, a €50 fitness band covers the basics.
The basic model’s reported battery capacities are 390mAh for the 40mm version and 445mAh for the 44mm version. Those figures are in the expected range, not a dramatic leap. Both watches are said to support WPC-based fast wireless charging, which should help, although charging speed is only part of the equation. What users want is a watch that survives sleep tracking, a full workday and a workout without becoming a nightly ritual.
The larger Galaxy Watch9 may therefore be the practical pick, assuming these figures hold. It should have the better battery headroom, a roomier screen and a smaller price than the Ultra. That’s not glamorous advice, but it’s usually the right advice.
Ultra 2 looks built for harsher conditions, and a higher bill
The Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is reportedly LTE-only at €749. For that money, Samsung is said to offer a 1.52-inch AMOLED display, 64GB of storage and an 800mAh battery. The claimed 5,000-nit maximum brightness would put it among the most aggressively specified smartwatch displays on the market, at least on paper.
Durability is the clearer dividing line. The regular Galaxy Watch9 is tipped for IP68 dust and water resistance plus 5ATM water resistance. The Ultra 2 is reported to step up to IP69K and 10ATM+. IP69K is designed around resistance to high-pressure, high-temperature water jets; 10ATM indicates a higher water-pressure rating. Neither label means every water sport or diving scenario is automatically safe, so buyers should still read Samsung’s final guidance rather than treating ratings as a permission slip.
Both models are expected to include Samsung’s BioActive sensor, a temperature sensor, barometer and geomagnetic sensor, alongside LTE, Bluetooth 6.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC and GPS. It’s an extensive list, though features such as Bluetooth 6.0 will only matter if the final hardware and software implementation delivers a tangible benefit. Spec-sheet inflation is easy. Reliable GPS tracks and trustworthy health measurements are harder.
Samsung will presumably settle the details at Unpacked. If the Galaxy Watch9 pricing and display claims prove accurate, the company’s main challenge won’t be explaining why the watches do more. It’ll be proving that those brighter, pricier wrist computers are useful enough to wear every single day.
