Pixel 10 Pro Fold Launches at the Worst Time for Google and Foldables

Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold Arrives Just as the Foldable Market Surges

At Squaredtech.co, we analyze every major hardware launch with a focus on timing, market positioning, and real-world value. That’s why the Pixel 10 Pro Fold already has us raising red flags before its official launch.

Google is set to unveil the Pixel 10 series in just weeks. While the standard Pixel 10 models seem to focus on minor design updates and modest internal upgrades, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold faces a different challenge. Google is entering its third year of foldable hardware—and instead of innovating, it appears to be playing it safe.

That’s a big risk.

Samsung just launched its most refined foldable yet. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is slimmer, lighter, and more powerful than ever before. Meanwhile, OnePlus has stepped away from the U.S. foldable market entirely. This should have created a perfect opening for Google to claim more space. Instead, leaks suggest the Pixel 10 Pro Fold offers minimal improvements, including:

  • A slightly larger external display
  • Faster charging
  • A larger battery
  • Qi2 support
  • The new Tensor G5 chip

That sounds solid—but it’s not enough. Not this year.

Google took big steps forward with the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. That device helped the company rebound from a disappointing first-gen Fold. But now, with foldables finally starting to break into the mainstream, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold risks becoming irrelevant—too heavy for casual users, not advanced enough for enthusiasts, and priced too high for newcomers.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold Fails to Meet Foldable User Expectations

Here at Squaredtech, we know what foldable users value: lightweight form factors, durable hardware, powerful multitasking features, and high-end display specs. These elements define the best foldable phones on the market.

Unfortunately, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold doesn’t check all those boxes.

Let’s start with bulk. The Pixel 10 Pro Fold is expected to weigh 258 grams and measure 10.8mm thick when folded. That’s heavier and thicker than the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. And it falls far behind Samsung’s latest Galaxy Z Fold 7, which comes in at 215 grams and just 8.9mm thick.

Samsung has made its foldable feel like a regular phone. Google has gone the other way. Even if the Pixel 10 Pro Fold includes a better battery or faster charging, those upgrades don’t justify making the device harder to carry and use.

The other issue is performance and features. Multitasking, stylus support, and high-level software customization are top priorities for foldable users. Google’s foldable UI still lacks the productivity tools found in Samsung’s Flex Mode or Huawei’s multitasking panel. The Pixel software experience feels more like a large-screen Android phone than a tablet-laptop hybrid.

If you’re spending $1,800 or more, you expect premium features. But based on everything we’ve seen, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold may struggle to deliver anything game-changing. And that makes it hard to justify the cost.

Why the Pixel 10 Pro Fold Might Miss Its Audience Entirely

At Squaredtech, we ask one core question with every product we cover: Who is this for?

Right now, it’s hard to answer that for the Pixel 10 Pro Fold.

It’s not compact or light enough for users who just want a stylish foldable. It’s not powerful or productive enough for hardcore multitaskers and creators. And it’s certainly not affordable enough to attract first-time foldable buyers.

The most obvious path forward would have been a price cut on the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. That phone still holds up well—especially with a strong build and polished software experience. Offering it at a reduced price could have brought in new buyers and grown Google’s base in the foldables category.

Instead, Google seems ready to launch a slightly updated model with a high price tag and unclear improvements.

Here’s what we believe Google should have done:

  • Extend the Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s life at a reduced price
  • Delay the Pixel 10 Pro Fold until major upgrades were ready
  • Focus foldable efforts on software updates and ecosystem integration
  • Launch smart accessories to complement foldable use cases

By contrast, launching a third-gen foldable that feels like a “2.5” version risks damaging Google’s credibility in this space. Without clear advancements or price adjustments, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold looks like a product stuck between audiences.

Pixel 10 Pro Fold Features: What You Do Get

We’re not ignoring the Pixel 10 Pro Fold’s improvements—they’re real. The device is expected to feature:

  • Tensor G5 chip: Promises better AI processing and power efficiency
  • IP68 rating: First foldable with full dust and water resistance
  • Larger battery: Likely to improve screen-on time
  • Qi2 charging support: Enables magnetic wireless charging without a case
  • Slightly larger external screen: Easier one-handed use

These upgrades matter. The IP68 certification, in particular, is a big deal—no foldable has offered it yet. That’s a win for durability, and if Google delivers, they deserve credit for leading that charge.

But these are iterative gains, not revolutionary ones. And they come in a form factor that is heavier and thicker than what competitors now offer.

Squaredtech’s Final Take: The Foldable Market Moves Fast—Google Didn’t

At Squaredtech, we understand how fast mobile trends move. Foldables have matured quickly. Users expect lightweight builds, refined software, and aggressive pricing. In 2024 and 2025, those are table stakes.

Google had momentum after the Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Now, they’re risking that momentum by playing it safe.

If Google wanted to stay competitive:

  • It needed a thinner and lighter foldable
  • It needed new multitasking features and Pixel-specific software tricks
  • Or, it needed to drop the price and grow the audience

Instead, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is shaping up as a mid-cycle refresh that doesn’t excite the high-end buyer and isn’t priced low enough to reach new users.

That’s why Squaredtech views this launch as a misstep—and possibly a missed opportunity in the foldable space.

Verdict: Unless you’re set on Pixel software and need a foldable right now, it may be smarter to wait. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 sets a new standard, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold might offer better value once the 10 Pro Fold drops.

Stay tuned to Squaredtech.co for our full review once the Pixel 10 Pro Fold officially launches. We’ll be testing its display, software, durability, and real-world multitasking performance. And if Google surprises us—we’ll say so. But right now, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold feels like a step sideways at the worst possible time.
