Steve Wozniak’s AI remarks at Grand Valley State University earned applause at a moment when other technology speakers have found a far less welcoming audience. That contrast matters. Commencement speeches are supposed to meet graduates where they are: at the edge of a career, carrying ambition alongside understandable anxiety. Too often, the conversation around artificial intelligence has treated that audience as an afterthought.

At Grand Valley State University’s commencement ceremony earlier this month, the Apple cofounder stepped to the podium and made an AI joke that actually landed. Wozniak’s line was simple: “You have AI — actual intelligence,”

It is an unusually pointed observation for a graduation stage, even delivered as a joke. The phrase turns the industry’s favorite acronym back toward the people being asked to live with its consequences. Instead of presenting AI as an all-knowing force arriving from above, Wozniak reminded graduates that their own judgment, curiosity and capacity to learn still count.

That is not an anti-technology message. Coming from Wozniak, it would be difficult to read it that way. His standing comes from a career tied to the personal-computing era, which makes his emphasis on human intelligence feel less like nostalgia than a corrective to the current mood. The public debate has often swung between two unhelpful poles: AI as inevitable salvation or AI as an immediate threat to every kind of work. Neither framing leaves much room for the person using the technology.

Wozniak’s remarks also landed differently because he did not appear to ask graduates to celebrate disruption for its own sake. That language has become familiar in tech circles, but it can sound detached when the people listening are entering an unsettled job market. A commencement audience does not need to be told that change is coming. It needs someone to acknowledge that adapting to change still requires human choices.

Why graduates are pushing back on AI boosterism

The reaction to other commencement speakers shows how quickly a generic pro-AI message can go wrong. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and real estate executive Gloria Caulfield were both booed at separate ceremonies for pro-AI comments. The boos were not merely a rejection of a new technology. They reflected frustration with the way AI is frequently discussed by people who hold influence, wealth or institutional power while younger workers are left to absorb the uncertainty.

That uncertainty is not abstract for the class of 2026. AI-related layoffs and shifting hiring practices mean the class of 2026 faces one of the most uncertain job markets in decades. Graduates are hearing that AI may create opportunities, but they are also seeing employers rethink which entry-level tasks need people, which skills they value and how quickly they expect workers to change.

There is a difference between telling students that technology will shape their careers and telling them that the technology has already made them less necessary. The first can be useful advice. The second is a bleak message to deliver at a ceremony built around achievement. It is little surprise that audiences react badly when speakers seem more interested in praising AI than in recognizing the pressure surrounding it.

Wozniak’s formulation avoided that trap. By calling graduates’ abilities “actual intelligence,” he put the people in the room first. The joke also carried a broader point: intelligence is not just the production of an answer. It involves deciding what matters, noticing when an answer is wrong, understanding a situation and taking responsibility for the result. Those are the qualities graduates will need whether AI changes their work quickly or slowly.

That distinction gets lost in much of the hype dominating commencement stages this season. AI systems can produce text, images, analysis and recommendations with startling speed. But speed is not wisdom, and output is not accountability. The person who relies on a system still has to decide when to trust it, when to challenge it and when not to use it at all.

A more credible message about technology

Wozniak’s words resonate because they offer graduates neither false reassurance nor empty futurism. They do not suggest that AI can be ignored. Nor do they accept the idea that the future belongs only to the companies building the systems. The people who understand how to think independently, communicate clearly and apply judgment have a role in determining how technology is used.

That is especially relevant as hiring practices shift. Young workers have always had to prove themselves, but AI has added a new layer of confusion to the early-career bargain. If software can handle some of the tasks traditionally assigned to newcomers, employers need to be more deliberate about how they develop talent rather than simply treating automation as a reason to narrow the path in.

Graduates, meanwhile, should resist the pressure to treat AI fluency as identical to intelligence. Knowing how to use a tool can be valuable. So can knowing its limits. The strongest workers will not be those who copy machine-generated output without thought; they will be the ones who can make sense of a problem, ask better questions and stand behind the work they submit.

That is why the applause at Grand Valley State University carries more weight than a pleasant commencement anecdote. It suggests that audiences are not rejecting technology outright. They are rejecting the assumption that enthusiasm for AI requires them to dismiss their own concerns, prospects or abilities.

Wozniak’s message gave graduates a better starting point. AI may be part of the environment they enter, and it may alter that environment in ways no speech can neatly resolve. But the graduates themselves are not passive inputs into that process. They have, as Wozniak put it, actual intelligence.
