Foldables tend to feel denser than conventional phones because their mass is concentrated in a shorter, thicker shape when shut. Apple’s unusual short-and-wide design could help with grip, but it could also make the Duo feel more like carrying a compact paperback in a front pocket than a conventional candy-bar phone.
This is the central engineering bargain. iPhone Duo thickness is impressively low when the handset becomes a 7.6-inch inner-screen device, yet Apple appears to have accepted a meaningful weight penalty to get there. The design makes a clearer case for a foldable
Apple’s hardware layout may be more consequential than the raw millimeters. The iPhone Duo uses a 5.4-inch exterior display and a 7.6-inch internal panel. That gives it a cover screen roughly in familiar iPhone territory, then an inner canvas closer to a small tablet when opened.
That is a sensible pitch. The outer screen handles the mundane stuff: notifications, messages, maps, music controls and quick photos. Open it for reading, documents, side-by-side apps or a long flight. Anyone who has tried to edit a spreadsheet on a normal iPhone knows why the larger screen is appealing, even if they would rather not admit it.
But screen size alone won’t make the device stick. Apple needs iOS to make the transition between those displays feel intentional. The company’s iOS platform already has the foundations for multitasking and adaptable app layouts through the iPad ecosystem, but a foldable phone creates fresh questions: What happens when an app moves from 5.4 inches to 7.6? Does the cover display become a genuinely useful control surface? Will third-party developers bother?
Apple has historically waited until a product category is mature enough to impose its own conventions. That patience has worked with watches and earbuds; it has been less convincing with products that require developers to embrace an entirely new interaction model. My read is that the Duo’s software behavior, not its open-state thinness, will decide whether this becomes a lasting iPhone tier or an expensive curiosity.
The numbers Apple did not optimize for

The first buyers will be paying to find out whether Apple can make a folding iPhone feel ordinary enough for daily use. If it can, the 5.2mm figure will be a useful milestone.
