Headway Therapy Facial Scan: Comply or Lose Your Therapist

The Headway therapy facial scan mandate is the kind of policy that sounds routine until you think about who it actually affects. Headway, one of the more prominent insurance-based online therapy platforms in the US, began notifying clients on April 3rd that they’d soon need to verify their identity using a government-issued photo ID — and submit to a live facial scan through their device’s camera. The catch? There’s no opt-out. If you don’t comply, you’re off the platform.

The email, which a user shared with 404 Media, was blunt about the new process:

“To make sure Headway stays a safe and reliable place to get care, you’ll soon be asked to verify your identity by taking a picture of a valid government-issued photo ID in your portal. As part of this process, you’ll also be asked to take a clear photo of your face to confirm your identity. The facial image is never used for anything but identity verification.”

The face scan isn’t just a selfie. Users are required to move their head from side to side while their device camera captures the motion — a liveness detection technique designed to confirm you’re a real person and not just holding up a photo. It’s the same kind of technology increasingly used by banks, government agencies, and gig economy platforms. But therapy? That’s a different context entirely.

Why This Feels Different From a Bank Login

Biometric identity verification has become almost mundane in fintech. Open a new account with Revolut or Coinbase and you’ll likely go through something similar — snap your passport, record your face, done. Most people shrug and move on. But the Headway therapy facial scan sits in a fundamentally different category, and the reason is obvious once you say it out loud: therapy platforms hold mental health records.

We’re not talking about someone gaining access to your debit card. We’re talking about a system that links your biometric data — your face, your movement, your government ID — directly to records of your diagnoses, your medication, your session notes, your most private disclosures. The combination of biometric identifiers and sensitive mental health information in a single breach scenario is genuinely alarming.

And Headway isn’t a small operation. The New York-based startup has raised over $225 million in funding and positioned itself as a solution to the mental health access crisis by connecting patients with therapists who accept insurance. It has scale. Which means this policy affects a lot of people — many of whom are already in vulnerable situations and may not feel they have the luxury of simply walking away.

No Opt-Out Is the Real Story

Companies collecting biometric data isn’t new. What’s striking here is the structure of the consent. When Headway says “the facial image is never used for anything but identity verification,
