DJI Faces US Ban as Government Delays Audit

DJI, a leading drone manufacturer, faces an impending ban in the United States if the government does not complete a mandated audit within 43 days. This audit, required by the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), has yet to begin, putting DJI’s continued operations at risk.

The Countdown to a Potential DJI Ban in the US

Last December, DJI avoided an immediate ban when Congress passed the FY25 NDAA without including the Countering CCP Drones Act. Instead, the legislation required a risk assessment audit to determine whether DJI drones pose any security risks. This assessment must be finished within a year, or an automatic ban would be triggered.

Since the law’s passage, DJI has eagerly welcomed the audit as an opportunity to prove the safety and security of its products. However, the US government has failed to start this risk assessment for nearly a year, creating uncertainty around the company’s future in the US market.

Government Inaction and Pressures on the Audit Timeline

DJI has repeatedly urged the relevant US agencies to begin the inspection process. In April, DJI warned that delaying the audit could result in a rushed assessment that compromises fairness and credibility. Two months later, with only six months left until the deadline, DJI renewed its call for action.

Despite these appeals, government agencies continued to delay. In July, lawmakers proposed compressing the audit timeline to just 30 days, raising concerns from DJI about the possibility of a superficial review. DJI stated that a credible audit requires thorough examination, clear communication, and time to build trust. Rushing the process would undermine these goals.

It should be noted that DJI claims the audit has never officially been assigned to any agency. The company insists it has consistently requested a fair and transparent evaluation but has yet to see real progress. This lack of action threatens to trigger an automatic ban on DJI products regardless of their actual safety or compliance.

The High Stakes of the Potential DJI Ban for Consumers and the Market

If the audit does not begin soon, DJI could face a ban in the US that would significantly disrupt the drone market. DJI’s spokesperson warned that such a ban could happen “without just cause or due process.” This would affect not only the company but also the many users and businesses that rely on DJI drones.

Currently, the US market is already experiencing a soft import ban on DJI products, evidenced by the sparse availability of new DJI drones this year. We anticipate that this soft ban could quickly become a full prohibition once the audit deadline expires without agency action.

Even if the government conducts the audit, there is no guarantee the outcome will favor DJI. The company emphasizes the importance of a transparent review process based on evidence. Squaredtech will continue monitoring this situation closely as the deadline approaches and will inform readers on how these developments impact drone technology and regulation in the US.
